This paper introduces a new conceptual model to examine the impact of technological opportunism (technology sensing and response capabilities) on the adoption of incremental and radical technological innovation by small and medium enterprises (SMEs). We tested our hypotheses with data from 228 Indian SMEs using a symmetric method of partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS‐SEM) and the asymmetric method of fuzzy–set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) followed by sensitivity analysis done by an artificial neural network (ANN) modeling. PLS‐SEM results highlighted the roles of technology sensing and response capabilities as key drivers of both incremental and radical product innovations and the strengthening of these relationships by market uncertainty triggered by external events and crises. Apart from this, the results of fsQCA demonstrated multiple configurations of dimensions associated with the adoption of technological innovations by SMEs. This paper extends the current literature by exploring the process by which SMEs may adopt different types of technological innovation. Our findings also have useful implications for SMEs aiming to adopt technological innovations.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine how the variables of supply chain performance, performance of medical personnel, and occupancy overload affect operating performance moderated by dynamic capability variables. In a case study of public health center in Indonesia.Design/methodology/approach: This study uses the SEM-PLS quantitative method to analyze the questionnaire data obtained from 112 respondents consisting of medical administrators, nurses, and doctors. Validity and reliability tests were also used to ensure that the data were normally distributed and reliable.Findings: This study found that the supply chain performance variable and the performance of medical personnel had a positive effect on the operational performance of the public health center either through moderating the dynamic capability variable or not. Meanwhile, occupancy overload was found to have a negative effect on the operational performance of the public health center. And the moderating of the dynamic capability variable is only able to reduce its negative impact.Research limitations/implications: This study covers only a small number of public health center in Indonesia, so it is quite difficult to produce generalizable findings. This study also did not involve other internal and external variables that could potentially affect the operational performance of the public health center.Practical implications: The findings of this study can be a suggestion for the government and the management of the public health center to pay more attention to the variables that affect the operational performance of the public health center. Variables that have a positive impact should be increased and variables that have a negative impact should be mitigated.Social implications: Health centers that have effective and efficient operating management will be able to maximize the performance of patient services armed with available resources. The findings of this study can help the public health center to anticipate a surge in patient visits which can reduce the operating performance of the public health center.Originality/value: This study combines the variables of supply chain performance, medical personnel performance, occupancy overload, dynamic capability, and operating performance in one causality model framework. In contrast to other studies that did it separately.

Disruptive Innovation Path of Start-Ups in the Digital Context: The Perspective of Dynamic Capabilities

In the context of digitalization, start-ups cultivate the dynamic capabilities enabled by digital technology and promote disruptive innovation, which has become the key for enterprises to achieve catch-up in the digital age. However, the path to achieving disruptive innovation with dynamic capabilities has not been revealed to date. This paper summarizes the dynamic capability dimension in the digital context by applying the grounded theory method and divides the evolution of disruptive innovation into the sprout stage, growth stage, and expansion stage. Based on the logic of “motivation–action–result”, this paper reveals the path of realization path for the disruptive innovation of start-ups under the influence of dynamic capabilities in the digital context. The results show that the disruptive innovation of start-ups can be attributed to the different dimensions of dynamic capabilities. Digital technology allows for enterprises to achieve disruptive innovation by enabling dynamic capabilities. This paper broadens the research on dynamic capability theory and disruptive innovation theory in the digital context. Furthermore, it provides a reference and inspiration for start-ups in the same situation, aiming to realize disruptive innovation by cultivating dynamic capabilities with digital technology.
