Role of Computed Tomography in Pre- and Postoperative Evaluation of a Double-Outlet Right Ventricle

Abstract: Double-outlet right ventricle (DORV) is a type of ventriculoarterial connection in which both great arteries arise entirely or predominantly from the right ventricle. The morphology of DORV is characterized by a ventricular septal defect (location and relationship with the semilunar valve); bilateral coni and aortomitral continuity; the presence or absence of outflow tract obstruction; tricuspid-pulmonary annular distance; and associated cardiac anomalies. The surgical approach varies with the type of DORV and… Show more

“…Furthermore, having 3D printed models allowed ad hoc assessment and evaluation of sizes, shapes, relationships, and orientations of various intracardiac structures. Thus, the general feedback from our clinical center matches the experience from other retrospective studies ( 10 12 ).…”

“…Furthermore, having 3D printed models allowed ad hoc assessment and evaluation of sizes, shapes, relationships, and orientations of various intracardiac structures. Thus, the general feedback from our clinical center matches the experience from other retrospective studies (10)(11)(12). According to members of the heart team, the main advantage provided by both 3D reconstruction and 3D printing was that different treatment strategies could be elaborated and discussed easier, as the entire intra-cardiac anatomy could be analyzed at once.…”

“…Echocardiography is the key non-invasive diagnostic imaging tool that is usually sufficient to manage most children with heart disease ( 1 , 2 ). However, cross-sectional imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) are increasingly used in pediatric cardiology, and can provide additional anatomical, structural, and functional information ( 3 5 ). In adult cardiology, nuclear imaging techniques are used for evaluating myocardial perfusion and viability, pulmonary perfusion, ventricular function, and detection of inflammatory processes.…”

“…According to the society of Thoracic Surgeons database, the patients with a DORV are classified into 4 basic types; (a) Fallot type: DORV with subaortic VSD and pulmonary stenosis (PS), (b) VSD type: DORV with doubly committed VSD and no PS, (c) Taussig Bing anomaly: DORV with subpulmonic VSD and D) DORV with remote VSD or atrioventricular septal defect type (AVSD) [1,6,7].…”
