Role of color flow Doppler ultrasound in the evaluation of acute scrotal pain

Abstract: Color flow Doppler ultrasound is a critical tool in the assessment of the scrotum. Ultrasound is the first-line imaging modality and can rapidly differentiate between surgical and nonsurgical conditions, allowing for appropriate and prompt patient management. We review the role of color flow Doppler in the evaluation of acute scrotal pain, highlighting some of the most commonly seen pathologies such as epididymo-orchitis and testicular torsion.

“…It is important to recognise that REDF may also be present in partial testicular torsion; due to compromise of the vasculature resulting from torted vessels. 5,12,17 Gaps exist in the literature regarding whether REDF occurs as a result of compressive conditions without the presence of TCS. REDF in any context should be treated with urgency as it indicates impending infarction and there is limited time to save the vascular supply.…”
