Role of color Doppler imaging in diagnosing and managing pregnancies complicated by placental chorioangioma

Abstract: Color Doppler imaging helps differentiate placental chorioangioma from other placental lesions and may be useful in the prenatal follow-up of chorioangioma.

“…These lesions appear as well-circumscribed, rounded, hypoechoic or mixed-echogenicity masses protruding from the fetal side of the placenta (46,50). Most are located near the cord insertion, and Doppler imaging reveals substantial vascularity or a large feeding vessel (46)(47)(48) (Fig 20).…”

“…Chorioangiomas are the most common, occurring in less than 1% of pregnancies (46,47). Placental teratomas are extremely rare and are similar in appearance to chorioangiomas, but are differentiated by the presence of calcifi cations (46).…”

“…11 Some studies have found only arterial blood flow in chorioangiomas, 12,13 some have found only venous waveforms, 14 and a few studies have demonstrated both arterial and venous waveforms. 9 Doppler flow characteristics include either abundant blood flow or a single large feeding vessel within the tumor with a branching pattern.…”

“…Spontaneous abortion is characterised by degenerative changes on histology and small vesicles that are focal rather than diffuse in contrast to PMD 4. Placental chorioangioma has a well-circumscribed echogenic area with increased vascularity which may be seen as a protrusion on the fetal placental surface 6. This increased flow may lead to fetal congestive heart failure.…”
