“…In this study we did not find any decrease in lumbar CSF amine metabolite concentrations in depressed patients during illness as has been reported for 5-HIAA Subrahmanyam (1975)). The normal levels of 5-HIAA and MHPG found in depressed patients in this study are in accord with reports by Roos & Sjostrom (1969) and Wilk et al (1972), and O'Keefe & Brooksbank (1973), respectively.…”

“…Interestingly, pramipexole and bromocriptine improved the mood of bipolar disorder depressed patients (Silverstone, 1984; Zarate et al, 2004), supporting a catecholamine deficiency during depression. Other support for a hypodopaminergic state during depression comes from reduced cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of the metabolite of dopamine homovanillic acid in untreated bipolar disorder depressed patients (Subrahmanyam, 1975; Gerner et al, 1984). When bipolar disorder depressed patients were treated with medication, normal or increased homovanillic acid levels were observed compared to controls.…”

“…Although the sample size was small, both unipolar and bipolar patients were reported to have similar, reduced levels of HVA (Jimerson and Berrettini, 1985;Asberg et al, 1984). When depressed patients were not given drug washout periods or not compared with matched controls, HVA levels were reported to be either increased or not changed, compared with controls (Gerner et al, 1984;Subrahmanyam, 1975). Interestingly, CSF levels of HVA have been reported to be elevated in depressed patients that also showed psychotiddelusional symptoms (Aberg-Wistedt et al, 1985;Sweeney et al, 1978).…”
