To investigate the mechanism underlying the plant growth-promoting (PGP) effects of strain Streptomyces sp. TOR3209, PGP traits responsible for indoleacetic acid production, siderophore production, and phosphate solubilization were tested by culturing the strain TOR3209 in the corresponding media. The effects of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by the strain TOR3209 on plant growth were observed by co-culturing this strain with tobacco seedlings in I-plates. Meanwhile, the effects of VOCs on tobacco gene expression were estimated by performing a transcriptome analysis, and VOCs were identified by the solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) method. The results showed positive reactions for the three tested PGP traits in the culture of strain TOR3209, while the tobacco seedlings co-cultured with strain TOR3209 revealed an increase in the fresh weight by up to 100% when compared to that of the control plants, demonstrating that the production VOCs was also a PGP trait. In transcriptome analysis, plants co-cultured with strain TOR3209 presented the highest up-regulated expression of the genes involved in plant growth and development processes, implying that the bacterial VOCs played a role as a regulator of plant gene expression. Among the VOCs produced by the strain TOR3209, two antifungal molecules, 2,4-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-phenol and hexanedioic acid dibutyl ester, were found as the main compounds. Conclusively, up-regulation in the expression of growth- and development-related genes via VOCs production is an important PGP mechanism in strain TOR3209. Further efforts to explore the effective VOCs and investigate the effects of the two main VOCs in the future are recommended.

Effects of Biopesticides and Undersown Cover Crops on Soil Properties in the Organic Farming System

The inclusion of undersown cover crops in crop rotations and the use of biopesticides are essential for the long-term sustainability of the agroecosystem in organic farming. We hypothesized that biopesticides and undersown cover crops (crimson (incarnate) clover (Trifolium incarnatum Broth.), hairy (winter) vetch (Vicia villosa Roth.), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), and winter rye (Secale cereale L.)) are likely to have a positive impact on soil agrophysical and biological properties. Soil shear strength, soil aggregate–size distribution, plant root dry biomass and number and biomass of earthworms were determined at the end of the plant growing season. We concluded that the application of biopesticides and growing of undersown cover crops decreased soil shear strength and increased the percentage of macro-aggregates (0.25–10 mm) in the plough layer. In the plots with cover crops, plant root biomass was found to be significantly higher by a factor of 1.9 to 3.5, compared to the plots without cover crops. The application of biopesticides and undersown cover crops did not significantly affect the number and biomass of earthworms in the soil. The abundance of earthworms was more influenced by meteorological conditions.

Technology-based innovations in the bio-economy are expected to provide new market opportunities for agro-industrial growth in developing countries. This study explores how domestic entrepreneurs have been benefiting from the growing global demand for sustainable agribusiness by establishing themselves in the agricultural bio-inputs sector. Aiming to explore how developing countries can build agro-industrial capabilities that go beyond farming, a case study was conducted in Argentina giving the country’s large domestic market for agricultural inputs. The assessment was based on official data and a survey conducted with a sample of 14 Argentinean companies. Results revealed a growing number of domestic companies in the bio-inputs market, which accounted for 74% of the total number of companies by 2022. Contextual aspects that favored domestic players include private investments by local entrepreneurs, the use of locally available technologies, support from public innovation centers and assertive market strategies. Principal component analysis revealed different business models, which include companies focusing on the development of new products, companies with professional industrial plants for large-scale production and companies with a strong marketing component reaching out to farmers. The global growth of sustainable bio-based agricultural production offers areas of opportunities for domestic investments in cleaner agro-industrial sectors that go beyond the primary production of commodities and can build industrial capabilities in developing countries.
