“…Therefore, this could be the possible reason for lack of diurnal variations on a 12 hr basis for NO 3 -('daytime/nighttime' concentration = 0.96) as explained in Section 3.2. This finding is different from the observations reported in other regions of the World (e.g., Sharma et al (2007) at Kanpur, India; Hu et al (2008) at Pearl River Delta, China; Poulain et al (2011) at Leipzig, Germany).…”

“…Nitrate (NO 3 -) daily mean and maximum concentrations in PM 10-2.5 and PM 2.5 vary from 0.64 to 2.05 and from 0.09 to 0.24 µg/m 3 , respectively. The low mass concentration of NO 3 -in the fine mode may be attributed to the formation of instable ammonium nitrate during warm season (Querol et al, 2004;Sharma et al, 2007;Theodosi et al, 2011). In fact, the temperature was always above 20°C during the day (Malaguti et al, 2013) favoring the well-known phenomenon of NH 4 NO 3 evaporation from filters during sampling.…”

“…The IIT Kanpur campus, located on the Grand Trunk Road, is about 17 km away from the city center of Kanpur (Fig. 1, after Sharma et al, 2007), where automobiles and a power plant are the principal causes of air pollution, supplemented by biomass burning in winter . The city is mostly encircled by vegetation and agricultural fields.…”
