Role of anterior segment optical coherence tomography angiography in the assessment of acute chemical ocular injury: a pilot animal model study

Abstract: To examine the use of anterior segment-optical coherence tomography angiography (AS-OCTA) in the assessment of limbal ischemia in an animal model chemical ocular injury. We conducted a prospective study using an established chemical ocular injury model in 6 rabbits (12 eyes), dividing the cornea limbus into 4 quadrants. Chemical injury grade was induced based on extent of limbal injury (0 to 360 degrees) and all eyes underwent serial slit-lamp with AS-OCTA imaging up to one month. Main outcome measure was chan… Show more

“…Hence, subgroup risk should be determined, with caution, and confirmed with studies having a larger sample of subgroups. Although the Roper-Hall classification defines a classic method, there are reports for using DUA 32 or even the use of fluorescein and/or indocyanine green angiography, in addition to angio-OCT. 37 , 38 Therefore, there is a need of more recent classifications to evaluate the outcomes of the current study, before comparing it with present literature.…”

“…Anterior segment imaging was performed pre-operatively and post-operatively at week 1, month 1, month 3, and month 6 using a digital slit-lamp camera (Topcon ATE-600, Nikon Corp) with a standard diffuse illumination (×10 magnification, flash power 4) for colour photography. Next, AS-OCTA of the episcleral vessels in all cornealimbal quadrants was conducted using a previously described scan protocol ( 26 ), using a spectral domain optical coherence tomography system (Nidek RS-3000 Advance 2, Gamagori, Japan) with a central wavelength of 880 nm, axial resolution of 7 um and transverse resolution of 15 um (anterior segment module). The eye tracker function was deactivated for imaging acquisition.…”

“…In a rabbit model where the chemical injury was induced in a graded manner in different quadrants of the eye, the changes in limbal vasculature were studied over a period of 1 month using AS-OCTA [55]. The fellow eyes were uninvolved and taken as controls.…”
