Role of animal meats in cardiovascular diseases with reference to Sub-Saharan Africa: A review

Abstract: Although animal food products are important sources of dietary protein in the diets of many African communities, questions are being raised concerning the role of animal meats and other animal products in chronic diseases including cardiovascular diseases. This review of the literature was, therefore, conducted to provide information on the role of animal meats and their nutrients in cardiovascular diseases, with reference to sub-Saharan Africa. “…With the high polarity, the desperation of DAG into aqueous media was better than TAG and MTAG, inducing easier migration to the surroundings and more contact between lipase and DAG (Liu et al ., 2021). In this context, DAG had a higher lipid breakdown and was hard to accumulate fat in the human body, confirmed by previous studies (Flickinger & Matsuo, 2003; Watanabe et al ., 2005; Lokuruka, 2007). Thus, the DAG‐MFGM reconstituted milk was a promising alternative to MTAG reconstituted milk in promoting human health.…”

“…Food diversity and particularly animal protein consumption are limited in the region (Assan, 2014; Bartter et al, 2018; Fraval et al, 2019). Although excessive animal protein intake, especially of red meats, has been linked to negative health outcomes (Leroy et al, 2022; Lokuruka, 2010), it has been argued that in the sub‐Sahara increasing consumption of animal food products which are rich in protein may help to reduce the region's chronic problems of food insecurity and inadequate nutrient supply (Assan, 2014; FAO, 2020; Herrero et al, 2014; Leroy et al, 2022; Marinda et al, 2018; Mosites et al, 2017; Parikh et al, 2021).…”
