Purpose The purpose of this study is to evaluate the knowledge of operating room nurses (ORNs) on preventive practices in terms of protection against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Design This research is a descriptive study. Methods 279 ORNs from 17 provinces of Turkey included in this research. The data were collected online, using Google Form . ORNs were communicated via WhatsApp or via other social media platforms and were asked to answer the questionnaire. In the questionnaire, there were 12 questions on descriptive characteristics and 20 statements regarding the knowledge of ORNs on preventive practices for protection against COVID-19. Findings The rate of "yes" responses provided by ORNs to statements on preventive practices for protection against COVID-19 was found between 10% and 98.6% while the rate of "no" responses was found between 0% and 25.8%. The rate of those stating that they did not have an opinion on statements was found between 1.8% and 48.4%. Conclusion The level of knowledge of ORNs on protective measures against COVID-19 is quite high. However, there are important issues to consider such as the fact that the majority of the ORs do not employ an algorithm or a guideline for protective practices and that almost half of ORNs has not received a training on protection against COVID-19.

Effect of virtual reality simulation training on the response capability of public health emergency reserve nurses in China: a quasiexperimental study

ObjectiveTo develop a virtual reality simulation training programme, and further verify the effect of the programme on improving the response capacity of emergency reserve nurses confronting public health emergencies.DesignA prospective quasiexperimental design with a control group.ParticipantsA total of 120 nurses were recruited and randomly divided into the control group and the intervention group.InterventionParticipants underwent a 3-month training. The control group received the conventional training of emergency response (eg, theoretical lectures, technical skills and psychological training), while the intervention group underwent the virtual reality simulation training in combination with skills training. The COVID-19 cases were incorporated into the intervention group training, and the psychological training was identical to both groups. At the end of the training, each group conducted emergency drills twice. Before and after the intervention, the two groups were assessed for the knowledge and technical skills regarding responses to fulminate respiratory infectious diseases, as well as the capacity of emergency care. Furthermore, their pandemic preparedness was assessed with a disaster preparedness questionnaire.ResultsAfter the intervention, the scores of the relevant knowledge, the capacity of emergency care and disaster preparedness in the intervention group significantly increased (p<0.01). The score of technical skills in the control group increased more significantly than that of the intervention group (p<0.01). No significant difference was identified in the scores of postdisaster management in two groups (p>0.05).ConclusionThe virtual reality simulation training in combination with technical skills training can improve the response capacity of emergency reserve nurses as compared with the conventional training. The findings of the study provide some evidence for the emergency training of reserve nurses in better response to public health emergencies and suggest this methodology is worthy of further research and popularisation.

Purpose The purpose of this project was to design, develop, implement, and manage a sustainable process for pediatric pre-operative COVD-19 testing and use the test results to determine the level of personal protective equipment and infection control required for each patient for optimal surgical scheduling and preservation of resources. Design This quality improvement project used the Plan-Do-Study-Act methodology Multiple cycles of re-evaluation refined this process which was standardized across the enterprise. Methods A process for pre-operative testing for all patients undergoing procedures requiring anesthesia was developed and implemented. Findings A safe, feasible, timely process was developed and piloted to obtain COVID-19 test results to guide individualized interventions. During the pilot, 1707 patients were screened, and five tested positive for COVID-19, eliminating the need to manage 1702 patients as COVID-19 positive. Conclusion To continue to safely re-open, knowledge of the patient's COVID-19 status is imperative to ensure a safe journey through the perioperative area.
