Role of alpha lipoic acid in protecting testes of adult rats from lead toxicity

Abstract: The current study was conducted to investigate the role of alpha lipoic acid (ALA) against testicular toxicity-induced by lead acetate (PbAc) in rats. Four groups of adult Wistar albino rats (8 for each) were intubated daily for 56 days as follows; control (C)received dislled water; lead acetate at dose of 5mg/kg b.w (T1); ALA at dose of 60mg/kg b.w (T2) and and group T3 received both of PbAc + ALA at the same doses of above. Blood samples were collected at 0, 28 and 56 day of the experiment, then the sera wer… Show more

“…Fatty diet has induced atherosclerotic changes compared to the control group on a regular diet. These atherosclerotic changes approximately absent in mice treated by plants in soaked or dried form with slightly better outcomes with soaked form (24). On the other hand, atorvastatin shown greatly reduced atherosclerotic changes compared to a positive non-treated control group with slightly better outcomes obtained with plant preparation compared to atorvastatin (11).…”

“…For instance, supplementation of α-LA protects against the ovary from the increased ROS level and the upregulated pro-apoptotic gene, TNF-α (33). In rat males, treatment with alpha-lipoic acid consistently functioned against the induced testicular toxicity manifested by enhanced sperm quality-associated parameters and increased proliferative activity of spermatogonia (34).…”

“…According to Campbell (8), the other part was placed in tubes that did not contain anticoagulants and left to clot at room temperature. It was centrifuged at a velocity of 3000 rpm for 15 minutes to impose the serum were kept at -20°C to estimate the level of thyroid hormones using ELISA technique (9), catalase, and superoxide dismutase by using commercial kits.…”
