Role of Adenosine Receptors in the Paradoxic Bradycardia Response of Rats to Inferior Vena Cava Occlusion During an Infusion of Isoproterenol

Abstract: Background-In susceptible humans, vasodepressor reactions are induced by restriction of venous return (upright tilting) and administration of isoproterenol. Because paradoxic bradycardia is a major manifestation of vasodepressor reactions, and allowing for extrapolation between paradoxic bradycardia in rats and vasodepressor reactions, we examined whether adenosine receptors mediate the paradoxic bradycardia reaction. Methods and Results-Paradoxic bradycardia was induced in rats by inferior vena cava occlusi… Show more

“…These reflex effects override its direct negative chronotropic and sympatho-inhibitory actions, and may be clinically relevant in the setting of exercise, vasodepressor syncope [37], congestive heart failure or myocardial ischaemia, or during adenosine-radiotracer stress testing. These actions overwhelm adenosine's direct negative chronotropic effects, resulting in a marked increase in heart rate.…”

“…These findings indicate concordance between this purine's reflex actions on the heart and on sympathetic discharge to other vascular beds. These reflex effects override its direct negative chronotropic and sympatho-inhibitory actions, and may be clinically relevant in the setting of exercise, vasodepressor syncope [37], congestive heart failure or myocardial ischaemia, or during adenosine-radiotracer stress testing.…”
