Role and utility of COVID-19 laboratory testing in low-income and middle-income countries: protocol for rapid evidence synthesis

Abstract: IntroductionAccurate and affordable laboratory testing is key to timely diagnosis and appropriate management of patients with COVID-19. New laboratory test protocols are released into the market under emergency use authorisation with limited evidence on diagnostic test accuracy. As such, robust evidence on the diagnostic accuracy and the costs of available tests is urgently needed to inform policy and practice especially in resource-limited settings. We aim to determine the diagnostic test accuracy, cost-effec… Show more

“…Monitoring the spread of COVID-19 is very important to contain the disease in its early stages and to ensure that the healthcare system is ready and prepared for proper control of the pandemic (de Salazar et al 2020;Narayanan et al 2020). Reverse transcription PCR is recommended for SARS-COV-2 diagnosis for its high sensitivity and specificity (Ouma et al 2021;Qaqish et al 2022). The establishment of molecular laboratories to cover the testing capacity required for massive screening to help the community is a real challenge, especially in low-resource settings, due to its high cost, limited number of available facilities, complex infrastructure requirements, and lack of trained personnel (Qaqish et al 2022;Maniruzzaman et al 2022).…”

“…Sungkai (P. canescens) is frequently used by the community as a traditional medicine by preparing it into basic components because it is effective in treating fever, illness, cough, and malaria (Elfita et al, 2023;Latief et al, 2021a;Ocan et al, 2023;Oktiansyah et al, 2023b). The secondary metabolites found in this plant include sitosterol, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, terpenoids, diterpenoids, and flavonoids.…”
