Role and Task Sharing Efforts of Women in Aquaculture Development

Abstract

Bangladesh is suitable in the world for fresh and saline water aquaculture. Due to multifaceted opportunities and well-suited climatic conditions, it is the best options for aquaculture. The rural women communities engaged in several tasks of aquaculture and their activities, but contribution is not well recognized. The study explored contribution and role of women with their task distribution and women engagement in aquaculture. It is necessary to develop gender-sensitive interventions in aquaculture towards recognition of women's role and their empowerment. These include social structure, policy, awareness, attitude, and other family issues. This study gives an insight into whether the involvement of women in the aquaculture sector may be considered as empowering them through leadership and providing a viable option for their sustainable livelihood. The study confirmed the contextual issues of women's engagement in the aquaculture and enables direction towards mainstreaming women contribution.
