Role- and Relationship-Based Identity Management for Private yet Accountable E-Learning

Abstract: In every communicative context, each participant assumes some kind of role and negotiates some type of relationship with their counterparts. In the e-learning domain, the roles (e.g. instructor, learner, marker, administrator, etc.) for participants are well structured and relationships (e.g. one-to-one, one-to-many, hierarchical, etc.) among roles are relatively predictable. This paper proposes rolebased and relationship-based identity management in the e-learning domain to enable participants to enjoy a desi… Show more

“…As long as privacy is at risk in these environments, user confidence is reduced and information sharing/disclosure behaviour is limited (Anwar, 2021). To ensure that the learning environment is secure, the privacy of the students is guaranteed (Anwar & Greer, 2012). The effectiveness and implementation of online learning is directly dependent on students' perceptions/knowledge of environmental safety and how they respond to occurring violations (Ali & Zafar, 2017).…”

“…Because they encounter real identity breaches in online environments (Borcea‐Pfitzmann et al, 2005), students may face the use of multiple identities due to privacy concerns (Anwar et al, 2006). In fact, the use of identities may vary from context to context (Anwar & Greer, 2012). In face‐to‐face classes, our facial expressions, tone of voice and body movements should not threaten the freedom of the other person.…”

“…This early work includes some of the elements found in more recent work by Mohd Anwar and Jim in user-controlled identity management that makes it possible for users to control the type of information that will be shared depending on the context of the interaction. This approach allows for privacy customization in terms of purposes, roles, and relationships (Anwar and Greer 2012b). Anwar and Greer (2012a) describe an approach to facilitating trust by allowing the use of multiple identities as a mechanism for secure reputation transfer.…”

“…The role-and relationship-based identity management system proposed by Anwar and Greer [7] for the e-learning domain uses public roles to assigned guarantor privileges and facilitate usage control over disclosed information. Maler [13] proposed a federated identity management system using widely deployed solutions of Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) and Liberty Alliance standards.…”
