Role and Potential of Aluminium and Its Alloys for a Zero-Carbon Society

Abstract: The environmental impact of aluminium can be greatly reduced through recycling. However, recycled aluminium ingots are currently used for the fabrication of lower-grade materials (i.e., cascade recycling) and cannot be used for the production of high-purity and high-grade wrought materials, for which demand is expected to increase in the future. Researching and developing upgrade recycling methods for aluminium is therefore urgently needed, where recycled ingots with a lower environmental impact are used for t… Show more

“…Articles of 25-30 per year are published through JILM, which come to about 5% of the total in Materials Transactions. In 2022, a special issue entitled "Aluminium and its Alloys for Zero Carbon Society" was edited by JILM, 66) collecting one overview paper, 67) two review papers 68,69) and 24 regular papers and published in the February issue, 2023. They were selected with strict review processes for the presentations made in The 18th International Conference on Aluminium Alloys (ICAA 18), Toyama, Japan on September 4-8, 2022.…”

“…For decades, the TRC process has been primarily used for the production of aluminum sheets, focusing on alloys such as 1xxx series, 3xxx, and 8xxx series [2][3][4][5][6]. However, in recent times, there has been active research and development on the manufacturing of high-alloy Al alloys, particularly for the production of sheets used in transportation equipment [7,8]. For high-alloy Al, such as the 5xxx series and 6xxx series, manufacturing is particularly challenging during continuous casting due to the wide freezing temperature range of the alloys [9][10][11][12].…”
