“…Results reveal that rogue-waveprone sea states can actually occur more often than once in the 25-yr period, which is currently used as a return period for ship design. The investigations carried out by Bascheck and Imai (2011) support this conclusion. It is important to note, however, that hindcast data are generally subjected to a number of uncertainties, which may have influenced the present result.…”

“…Interestingly enough, the authors have found that there is a notable increase of the probability of occurrence of freak waves when the sea level pressure gradient is strengthened and the directional wave spectrum is relatively narrow (directional spread about 30 degrees). Bascheck and Imai (2011) have suggested that ships predominantly travelling in the North Atlantic (the route from Rotterdam, Netherlands, to New York, USA) will encounter 20-30 rogue waves higher than 11 m during their service lives of 25-yr. The criterion H max /H s > 2.0 has been used and the conclusions are supported by the analysis of directional wave buoy data, therefore they can be regarded as unconservative.…”

“…Observations gathered by the oil and shipping industries suggest that there really is something like a true monster of the deep that devours ships and sailors without mercy or warning. Several catalogues of rogue-wave observations in the World Ocean are published now demonstrating their reality and wide distribution (Liu 2007;Didenkulova et al 2006;Didenkulova 2011, 2012;Baschek and Imai 2011;O'Brien et al 2017). During the last years, various physical models of the rogue-wave phenomenon have been intensively developed and many laboratory experiments conducted.…”

“…Indeed, rogue waves were also often removed from the time trace, as they were considered to be anomalies due to instrument errors". I.e., an extensive analysis of rogue waves was done by Baschek and Imai (see [4] at the U.S. west coast).…”
