We propose and demonstrate a cascaded distributed antenna system (DAS) for efficiently extending the coverage of the mmWave-based 5G indoor network. For this, we exploit the radio-over-fiber (RoF) system based on the intermediate-frequency-over-fiber (IFoF) transmission technique that is enabled to add/drop the specific wavelength to the designated remote antenna unit (RAU) with using optical splitters and coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) filters. Moreover, the IFoF transceivers (TRx) perform the subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) in order to transmit 2×8 frequency allocation (FA) 5G signals per a single optical carrier, where each FA has 100 MHz bandwidth, leading each RAU to support 2×2 MIMO operation. Consequently, the cascaded structure allows for the adaptive and flexible configuration of the order of MIMO in accordance of the required data throughput at the specific indoor area. We introduce the cascaded IFoF link structure that can support up-to 13.5 dB optical power budget with following error-vector-magnitude (EVM) performance characterizations. And then we experimentally demonstrate the RoF-based cascaded DAS network, showing that more than 1 Gb/s total throughput can be achieved per a single antenna. Furthermore, we examine the use of avalanche photodiode (APD) to further increase the optical power budget (i.e., the coverage) based on experiment as well as simulation.

The evolution of the global wireless market is accompanied by an increased need in terms of speed and number of users, lower latency, better coverage, better spectral efficiency and quality of service, etc. To meet these needs, 5G has recently been introduced as an effective solution which targets, via the large scale deployment of symmetric antennas, a wide variety of sectors such as energy, health, media, industry, transport and especially wireless cellular networks which are among the most important pillars of modern societies. Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MIMO) systems, which have been extended to “Massive MIMO” mode and which consist of increasing the number of radiating elements involved in the transmission and reception of the radio link, are a very promising solution for improving the spectral efficiency of wireless communication systems (WCSs). Motivated by the aforementioned developments, the present paper investigates the increased capacity of MIMO systems to improve transmission in WCSs using 5G. It carefully focuses on the evaluation of the development level and technical contribution of MIMO systems and millimeter wave (mmWave) bands in 5G wireless cellular networks (WCNs) and gives important recommendations.

Wavelength‐division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM‐PON) is a promising solution to cope with the exponential data traffic growth, particularly regarding future mobile fronthaul. WDM‐PON schemes, based on self‐seeded wavelength agnostic transmitters using reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOAs), are seen as an option to provide an analog radio‐over‐fiber (A‐RoF) alternative to the current digital fronthaul. Although these A‐RoF have been already successfully demonstrated, it was observed that the arrayed waveguide grating (AWG)‐filtering characteristics affect both the optical seed generation and the radio signal integrity, requiring a design optimization. In order to do so, in this article, we optimize the A‐RoF transmission performance by comparing Bessel, Gaussian, and flat‐top AWG‐filter formats. The impact of seed linewidth and red‐shift on the signal error‐vector magnitude (EVM) and phase rotation is also investigated. We have found that EVM performance for BPSK and 16QAM transmission provided an improvement of 45% when compared to our previous results, with a phase offset of 0.8°, indicating little to no distortion, as a result of the selection of the optimal AWG filtering response.
