Abstract: The neural retina leucine zipper (NRL) is an essential gene for the fate determination and differentiation of rod photoreceptors in mammals. Mutations in NRL have been associated with autosomal recessive enhanced S-cone syndrome and autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa.
