Roccellinastrum, Cenozosia and Heterodermia: Ecology and phylogeny of fog lichens and their photobionts from the coastal Atacama Desert

Abstract: Some deserts on Earth such as the Namib or the Atacama are influenced by fog which can lead to the formation of local fog oases - unique environments hosting a great diversity of specialized plants and lichens. Lichens of the genera Ramalina, Niebla or Heterodermia have taxonomically been investigated from fog oases around the globe but not from the Atacama Desert, one of the oldest and driest deserts. Conditioned by its topography and the presence of orographic fog, the National Park Pan de Azúcar in the Atac… Show more

“…Although the presented method has been successfully applied for the first time by the author team for a large set of lichens including both their mycobionts and photobionts ( 87 ), we identified several limitations of the method regarding cryptogams. The manufacturer, for example, suggests an extension of the PCR cycle duration for target regions >2,000 bp, but we found some primer/organism combinations where neither the standard cycle nor the extension of the cycle time resulted in successful amplifications.…”

“…INCb aims to shed light on the diversity of unicellular cyanobionts from lichens by isolating and characterizing them, creating a baseline to which additional aspects can be added in the future. Our ongoing investigations use the polyphasic approach combined with direct photobiont picking [ 48 ], with which we have isolated new unicellular cyanobionts and free-living cyanobacteria all from the orders Chroococcidiopsidales and Pleurocapsales. We can show that the few unicellular cyanobionts that have been identified cluster together with free-living cyanobacteria ( Fig.…”
