Robust Room Impulse Response Measurement Using Perfect Periodic Sequences for Wiener Nonlinear Filters

Abstract: The paper discusses a measurement approach for the room impulse response (RIR), which is insensitive to the nonlinearities that affect the measurement instruments. The approach employs as measurement signals the perfect periodic sequences for Wiener nonlinear (WN) filters. Perfect periodic sequences (PPSs) are periodic sequences that guarantee the perfect orthogonality of a filter basis functions over a period. The PPSs for WN filters are appealing for RIR measurement, since their sample distribution is almost… Show more

“…Since the robust measurement of the RIR in presence of nonlinearities with memory is an open and challenging problem, the authors and colleagues started researching possible solutions. A first approach was proposed in [44]- [47]. The approach is based on modeling the entire measurement system with an orthogonal nonlinear filter, a Legendre nonlinear (LN) filter in [44], [45] or a Wiener nonlinear (WN) filter in [46], [47].…”

“…A first approach was proposed in [44]- [47]. The approach is based on modeling the entire measurement system with an orthogonal nonlinear filter, a Legendre nonlinear (LN) filter in [44], [45] or a Wiener nonlinear (WN) filter in [46], [47]. The first-order kernel of this system is then identified using a PPS for nonlinear filters using again the cross-correlation method.…”

“…The complexity of application of (5) is in the practical difficulty of RIR determination. Acoustic measurements [ 18 ] or mathematical methods can be used to solve this problem. The image model method, first proposed in [ 19 ], is the most widespread among the latter.…”

“…Together with the already-mentioned nonlinear distortions introduced by the electro-acoustic system, the measurement is influenced by the characteristics of the sound sources, especially in near-field measurements [ 2 ], and environmental disorders, such as external noise, sound reflections, and temperature changes [ 31 ]. The use of a controlled environment, such as an anechoic chamber, can avoid some of these problems, e.g., noise, reflections, and temperature changes, while the nonlinear distortions can be prevented by choosing an effective measurement method and stimuli [ 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 ].…”
