Robust Reactive Janus Composite Particles of Snowman Shape

Abstract: We present a facile approach toward snowman-like silica@PDVB/PS Janus particles by seed emulsion polymerization using a gelable monomer MPS against a PDVB/PS hollow particle. Individual silica bulge is protruded from the seed particle surface, whose size is tunable. The silica@PDVB Janus particles are derived after dissolution of PS, which are robust to tolerate against organic solvents. Both sides are reactive for selective modifications to grow desired materials with tunable wettability and functionality. As… Show more

“…[207] The inherent amphiphilicity makes this new class of colloids to provide a powerful tool to generate active surfaces so as to manipulate the properties of interfaces. [208] A recent feature article enunciates the topical advances in engineering interfaces employing Janus particles. [209] Iwashita and colleagues [210] have described the synthesis of water-in-n-dodecane emulsion droplets stabilized by a series of close-packed polygonal plate-like particles and Janus amphiphilicity at the interface.…”

“…Several different types of polymeric JPs could be made this way and with precisely tuned reaction conditions snowman-type particles could be produced. JPs with hard and soft lobes PtBA/PS JPs were prepared by Bon et al [23], Daeyeon Lee et al [24] prepared PS/PPA JPs that can be subsequently modified via thiol-yne click reactions, Sun et al [25] obtained PS/PMMA with a hollow PS lobe, Hoffmann et al [26] prepared PMMA/PS JPs from PMMA seeds, Weitz et al [27] synthesised PS/PMMA and PS/PtBA seeds. Note the convention we have used, the initial seed particles are first written followed by the second lobe.…”

“…22 JPs are compartmentalized colloids which possess two sides of different chemistries or polarities. 23,24 These particles have broad potential applications in solid surfactants, oil and water separation, 25,26 optical probes and E-paper display technology, 27 and compatibilizers. 20,28 Nie 29 synthesized a Janus nanosheet and evaluated its ability to trap nonequilibrium morphology by interfacial self-assembly.…”
