One of the significant environmental issues is global warming, and governments have changed their procedures to reduce carbon emissions. Sustainability is commonly described as having three dimensions: environmental, economic, and social. There are numerous environmental impacts associated with energy systems and the significance of energy for living standards and economic development. Therefore, the movement towards intelligent energy systems and virtual power plants (VPPs) is being pursued more rapidly due to economic and environmental issues. The VPP is one of the technologies used to increase the entire system’s efficiency. Moreover, because of environmental pollution, increased greenhouse gas production, and global warming, countries’ policies have changed towards reducing the use of fossil fuels and increasing the penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) in distribution networks. However, RESs, such as wind turbines (WT) and photovoltaic (PV) panels, exhibit uncertain behavior. This issue, coupled with their high penetration, poses challenges for network operators in terms of managing the grid. Therefore, the sustainable virtual power plant (SVPP) is a suitable solution to overcome these problems and reduce the emissions in power systems. This study examines the cost of optimal operating of the SVPP and the amount of produced pollution in four different scenarios in the presence of a demand response program (DRP), energy storage system (ESS), etc., and the results are compared. The results indicate that the simultaneous implementation of DRPs and utilization of ESS can lead to a decrease in costs and pollution associated with SVPPs by 1.10% and 29.80%, respectively. Moreover, the operator can resolve the shortage and excess power generation that occurs during some hours.

This paper develops a robust chance-constrained model for handling the uncertainties of generation and consumption in multi-carrier energy hubs. The proposed model incorporates corresponding loading factors for each type of electrical, heating, and cooling loads. This is done to assess the maximum loadability of the whole system. In this respect, the chance-constrained approach is implemented for the feasibility assessment of the operation problem with uncertainties. The uncertainties which are assumed here include the forecast errors of electrical, heating, and cooling load demands, and the volatile solar power generation. The overall problem formulation is developed in the mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) framework. The standard chance-constrained approach is converted to a deterministic optimization model by utilizing the Big M method. The main objective of the proposed model is to maximize the loadability index with uncertainties while addressing the permissible risk index of the decision-maker. The studied energy hub comprises electrical, heating, and cooling loads, and the energy flow technique is adopted in this paper to model the load balance equations. The simulation results are presented for different scenarios while addressing features of the proposed model for the summer and winter seasons. Furthermore, the developed model is evaluated for different scenarios and a comparison is made with the information-gap decision theory

A rising number of industrial companies are aiming to increase the share of renewable generation in their electricity consumption, in order to decrease electricity costs or to fulfill portfolio requirements. This can be achieved by using pv or wind generation systems, which are directly connected to the industrial consumer. The volatility of the renewable generation can be balanced by employing an electricity storage system. The paper presents an MILP optimization model for the direct supply of an industrial consumer by a wind farm, coupled with a storage system. The model optimizes the dispatch of the storage system in order to minimize both the energy component as well as the capacity component of the consumers electricity cost. A case study is presented using the grid tariffs in Germany for two different legal scenarios and two load profiles. The operation of a modular compressed air energy storage system is analyzed and the optimal dimensions of the storage power and capacity are determined, for the proposed system.
