Robust optimization for improving resilience of integrated energy systems with electricity and natural gas infrastructures

Abstract: The integration of natural gas in electricity network requires a more reliable operating plan for increasing uncertainties in the whole system. In this paper, a threestage robust optimization model is proposed for resilient operation of energy system which integrates electricity and natural gas transmission networks with the objective of minimizing load curtailments caused by attacks. Nonconvex constrains are linearized in order to formulate the dual problem of optimal energy flow. Then, the proposed three-sta… Show more

“…A wide range of probabilistic models has been proposed, generally categorised as robust [14][15][16][17] and stochastic [18][19][20] models. These models may utilise mathematical techniques such as Benders decomposition (BD) [14,17,18], minmax optimisation [15], or meta-heuristic algorithms such as tabu search [16], ant colony [19], and hybrid approaches [20]. Among these solution methodologies, the BD technique has attracted a great interest since it is able to perform contingency analysis without enlarging the problem size and without sacrificing the optimality of the problem solution.…”

“…More reliable operational plans will be required when the gas network is integrated into the power grid because of the increased uncertainty of the whole system. Reference [108] proposed a three-stage robust optimization model for the flexible operation of an energy system. The model integrated a power grid and a natural gas transmission network to minimize load reduction from attacks.…”

“…However, when facing extreme events such as natural disasters and man-made attacks, power systems do not always perform well [2]. Lessons learned from some catastrophic accidents indicate that power outage sometimes is unavoidable [3], and thus the power systems need to be resilient, namely to be able to quickly restore from disasters [4].…”
