Robust Model Predictive Control based on Gaussian Processes: Application to drinking water networks

Abstract: Abstract-In this paper, a controller design based on robust Model Predictive Control (MPC) and Gaussian Processes (GP) for incorporating the disturbance forecasting has been proposed. Using a probabilistic system representation, the state trajectories considering the influence of disturbances can be obtained through the uncertainty propagation by using GP. Therefore, the worst-case state trajectories evolution over the MPC prediction horizon can be determined, which are potentially used by including them into … Show more

“…In both cases a better economical costs reduction is obtained with the MPC controllers. However, the MPC controllers dispose of full information in a centralized manner, and they also dispose of information of disturbances within the prediction horizon through a forecasting model (see [26] and references therein). In contrast, the distributed population and mass dynamics control approaches only possess of measured local information.…”

“…For the operational management of Drinking Water Networks (DWNs), MPC has been discussed and adopted as a standard approach since it is able to maintain multi-objective operational goals and find optimal setpoints for the actuators (see [2], [3], [4], [5], [6] and [7]). In these references, the flow-based model that involves linear differential-algebraic equations has been considered as the control-oriented model and the EMPC strategy for DWNs has been applied by solving a finite-horizon optimization problem.…”
