Robust mixed electron–photon radiation therapy optimization

Abstract: Purpose Mixed beam electron–photon radiation therapy (MBRT) is an emerging technique that has the potential to reduce dose to normal tissue while improving target coverage for cancer sites with superficial tumors. Advances in optimization algorithms and robotic linear accelerators have made the creation and delivery of complex MBRT plans realistic without the need for special additional collimators, devices, or resetup of the patient. However, no study has been performed on the robustness of MBRT dose distribu… Show more

“…Although MBRT plans in this study were not robustly optimized, Renaud et al (2019) 26 have shown that robust MBRT plans are necessary for deliveries of mixed electron‐photon modalities in realistic clinical conditions. This however raises the question of how to perform QA on the robustness of a plan.…”

“…The aim of this work was to confirm that the treatment plans produced by our MBRT treatment planning algorithm 16,26 could be delivered and measured accurately on a Varian TrueBeam accelerator. In addition, we sought to develop the framework required for a potential patient-specific QA protocol.…”

“…Full-fledged simultaneous optimization of mixed modality radiation treatments has been exercised for electron-photon combinations. [14][15][16] Fabiano et al 17 considered the combination of a horizontal fixed proton beamline combined with photons, and Kueng et al 18 consider triple modality photon −electron−proton treatments. In addition, several authors considered proton-photon treatments in which some fractions are delivered with protons and others with photons.…”
