Robust Load Frequency Control Schemes in Power System Using Optimized PID and Model Predictive Controllers

Abstract: Robust control methodology for two-area load frequency control model is proposed in this paper. The paper presents a comparative study between the performance of model predictive controller (MPC) and optimized proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controller on different systems. An objective function derived from settling time, percentage overshoot and percentage undershoot is minimized to obtain the gains of the PID controller. Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) are used to tune th… Show more

“…As one of the most widely-applied control methods in industry, model predictive control (MPC) ranks second only after PID control algorithm [11]. Recently, MPC has been extended to solve the optimal load frequency control (LFC) problems of power systems [12][13][14][15][16] and operation optimization issues of microgrids [17][18][19][20]. Especially, it should be noted that there are some existing works regarding MPC-based frequency control of microgrids [12,[19][20][21][22][23].…”

“…In the 1970s, Elgerd and Fosha firstly applied Control Theory to the load frequency control (LFC) problem of interconnected power systems [2]. Since then, many researchers have been working on the LFC analysis with variety of control methods [3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. To mention a few, Reference [3] designed an adaptive load frequency controller for a two-area power system and proposed an optimal control scheme.…”
