Mesh-dependent finite element (FE) analysis poses considerable limitations in terms of applying it in large deformation problems. As simulations such as projectile penetration are largely dependent on the material failure criterion, the artificial element erosion technique, which is usually incorporated in mesh-dependent FE techniques, may result in considerable inaccuracies. Therefore, over the last few decades, computational mechanists and engineers have focussed on implementing a mesh-independent analysis method to overcome the numerical instabilities that occur in mesh-dependent FE methods. The smooth-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) technique is one of the methods that is becoming popular among computational mechanists and engineers. The knowledge and understanding of different parameters involved in such simulation is essential prior to its application. In this study, a comprehensive numerical investigation of projectile penetration through monolithic aluminium plates using the SPH technique has been performed. While there have been studies reported in published literatures on the application of the SPH technique on projectile simulations, very limited attention has been placed on investigating the influence of different parameters on the analysis results, especially on deformation of the projectiles. One of the main objectives of this study is to investigate the contribution of different numerical parameters on the simulation of complete penetration of deformable projectiles (5.56 mm x 45 mm NATO standard) through 16 mm AA5061-H116 aluminium plates. The effects of particle density, smooth length, different particle sorting options, and scale factor for smooth length, have been parametrically studied and presented. In addition, the penetration mechanism of projectiles through a metallic target has been numerically and experimentally studied. Numerical simulations show very good agreement with the experimental results. The velocity time histories for monolithic aluminium plates show a “dip” in its velocity reduction, which is considerably difficult to observe in mesh-dependent methods. Three stages of the penetration process have been numerically identified and discussed.

This study proposes a honeycomb with a sine waveform to increase the impact resistance against bird strike on the vertical stabilizer leading edge. A 2-stage comparison was made using the experimental test results in the literature to validate the model in the finite element environment. At first, the change in diameter, velocity, pressure, and scattering of particles when the bird model hits a square plate was compared with experimental data. In the second stage, an impact was made on the vertical stabilizer leading edge made of composite sandwich material. The deformation in the Z-direction occurring in the vertical stabilizer leading edge’s center and the ribs’ convergence were compared. The Ls-Dyna results show reasonable qualitative agreement with the experimental result. Finally, the straight walls of the honeycomb in the vertical stabilizer leading edge were modeled as a sine wave. The analyses were diversified using design parameters with different values. According to the analysis results, improvements of up to 9.79%, 28.58%, and 5.02% were observed in the deformation, the approach of the ribs, and sum of the reaction forces, respectively. These results contribute to bird strikes where strength per unit weight is essential.

The water entry of a torpedo is a complex nonlinear problem, involving transient impact, free surface deformation, droplet splashing, and fluid-solid coupling, which poses severe challenges to traditional mesh methods. The meshless smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method shows unique advantages in capturing the complex features of the water entry of the torpedo. However, it still suffers from some inherent shortcomings, such as low surface discretization accuracy, poor discretization flexibility, and low calculation efficiency. In this study, an improved adaptive SPH algorithm is proposed to accurately and efficiently investigate the water entry of the torpedo. This method integrates meshless point generation and adaptive techniques simultaneously. Numerical results demonstrate that when the torpedo vertically enters the water at different velocities, the induced impact loads acting on the head of the torpedo fluctuate significantly with two peak values at the initial stage and thereafter stabilize at a later stage. The impact load acting on the torpedo, the entry depth of the torpedo, the splash height of the droplets, and the size of the cavity generated around the torpedo increase with the increment of the entry velocity. When the torpedo enters the water at different enter angles under the same initial enter velocity, both the vertical and the horizontal movements of the torpedo are observed, which results in more complex variations of parameters along the x- and y-axes. The findings and the corresponding numerical method in this study can provide a certain basis for the future designs of the entry trajectory and the structural bearing capacity of torpedoes.
