Robotic telestenting performance in transcontinental and regional pre‐clinical models

Abstract: Objectives This study was conducted to evaluate the association of geographic distance with robotic telestenting performance by comparing performance measures in transcontinental and regional pre‐clinical models of telestenting. Background Robotic telestenting, in which percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is performed on a remotely located patient, might improve PCI access, but has not been attempted over vast distances likely required to reach many underserved regions. Methods Telestenting performance wa… Show more

“…The use of endovascular simulators for device and workflow evaluation purposes have been described before with the CorPath robotic system. Madder et al 9,10 tested the feasibility of tele-PCI in a simulator model, and showed successful balloon/stent delivery and deployment to preselected coronary arteries, but no previous studies evaluated the performance of robotic tele-PVI. SFA interventional case simulations were selected for this study.…”

“… 7 8 Furthermore, the robotic system used in this study has been successfully operated over distances>3000 miles without perceptible latencies to the operating physician. 9 These results suggest RRET may be similarly feasible over vast distances.…”

“…The ability to perform efficient and safe procedures over the internet depends on the lag time, which is unfelt for latencies less than 250 ms. The measured latency in the human study was 53 ms 80 . Recently, 5G wireless networks have been opening a whole range of possibilities for remote procedures.…”
