Robotic control of a traditional flexible endoscope for therapy

Abstract: In therapeutic flexible endoscopy a team of physician and assistant(s) is required to control all independent translations and rotations of the flexible endoscope and its instruments. As a consequence the physician lacks valuable force feedback information on tissue interaction, communication errors easily occur, and procedures are not cost-effective. Current tools are not suitable for performing therapeutic procedures in an intuitive and user-friendly way by one person. A shift from more invasive surgical pro… Show more

“…Due to advanced robotic technologies, including superior 3-dimensional views, improved dexterity using an internally articulated EndoWrist ® (Intuitive Surgical, Sunnyvale, CA, USA), increased stability, and superior ergonomics compared with conventional laparoscopy [ 1 ], robotic surgery has been rapidly applied in general surgery [ 2 3 4 ]. Robotic systems enable surgeons to control a camera and robotic arms so they can perform complicated procedures more easily and precisely [ 5 ].…”

“…• Robotic endoscopes and guides such as the Medrobotics Flex R [8], the i-Snake R from the Imperial College [9], or motorized endoscopes from the University of Twente [10], which make the positioning and the use of standard instruments inserted inside the guide easier for surgeons. • Complete robotic telemanipulated platforms with specific motorized instruments.…”
