Robot‐assisted radical prostatectomy in an initial Japanese series: The impact of prior abdominal surgery on surgical outcomes

Abstract: Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy appears to be a safe approach for patients with prior abdominal surgery without increasing total operative time, robotic console time, positive surgical margin or the incidence of perioperative complications.

“…However, a signi cant difference in port insertion time was observed (32 and 28.5 min, respectively; P = 0.031). The results of this study are similar to our previous reports on the in uence of prior abdominal surgery on surgical outcomes of RARP [26]. Therefore, RAPN appears to be a safe procedure for patients with prior abdominal surgery.…”

“…Of the 150 patients who underwent RARP, 94 (63%) had no prior abdominal surgery. We found a signi cant difference in port insertion time, but none in total operative time, robotic console time, EBL, and perioperative complications between the two groups [26]. From these studies, RARP wasa a safe procedure, prior abdominal surgery was associated with no signi cant increase in perioperative outcomes.…”

“…However, patients who had dilatation of the internal inguinal ring without symptoms were included. RARPs were performed with the da Vinci robotic system (Intuitive Surgical, Sunnyvale, CA) by multiple surgeons and with six ports, as reported in a previous study [9]. Intraoperative pneumoperitoneum pressure was normally set in 8-10 mmHg, ternal inguinal ring, while the other, called 'distal incision', reached over 1 cm.…”

“…Seifman et al [8] reported that previous abdominal surgery increased the overall risk of transperitoneal laparoscopy and the location of the scar impacted the access complication rate. Although abdominal surgery was regarded as a contraindication for LRP by some investigators, previous abdominal surgery was not seen as a contraindication by others [9]. Currently, a detail analysis of perioperative complications showed no significant effect of previous abdominal surgery on robot-assisted LRP [10].…”
