The Society for the Teaching of Psychology (STP, Division 2 of the American Psychological Association) established its Excellence in Teaching Awards program in 1979.This article explores the history of STP’s teaching awards program: the establishment of the first four awards categories, the Committee on Teaching Awards, the awards’ endowment fund, expansion and refinement of awards criteria, changes in the venues for publicly honoring awardees, and the recent establishment of STP awards programs that honor achievements beyond teaching.

Honoring Teaching of Psychology (ToP) as it approaches its 40th anniversary, we extend prior overviews of its development and growth into 2012. We describe changes in editorial staff and journal organization, identify and describe the top 20 most frequent contributors to ToP, and present the results of a content analysis of issues published from 1999 through mid-2012 to complement past content analyses. We conclude that as ToP enters middle age, it has professionally matured throughout adulthood to have a fruitful life as a topical journal and has outgrown its earlier newsletter trappings with essentially all of its journal space now devoted to articles on teaching for teachers.

In recent years, national policy experts have questioned the overall quality of educational research, and they have suggested that researchers strengthen their scientific methods by maximizing the use of experimental designs. To promote more rigorous methodology, we discuss several new and often-overlooked opportunities for incorporating experimentation into the scholarship of teaching and learning in psychology. Although experiments can be difficult to conduct in educational settings, our methodological suggestions are particularly well-suited for relatively small-scale studies, like those typically published in Teaching of Psychology.
