Roadside dusts and soils contamination in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA

Abstract: / Roadside dusts and soils were collected from various nonindustrial districts in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, and analyzed for lead and copper contents. Results showed that the recent lead phase-down action has reduced the level of lead, but the concentrations of both metals are still higher than the background levels for normal soil. Elevated concentrations of copper in heavily traveled highways were noted, suggesting that much of the copper pollutants is probably of automotive origin. The concentration of lead wa… Show more

“…Fifth, heavy metal concentrations in soil decline over time where use of leaded gasoline has been stopped and surface‐water flow carries the metal ions away ( Byrd et al 1983; Tong 1990). After they leave the terrestrial environment, however, the mobilized metals may cause additional harm to aquatic biota.…”

“…Lead-based house paint sales were phased out in 1978 in response to the Lead Paint Poison Prevention Act (Tong 1990). The major processes that now release Pb-based house paint into the soil are deterioration and especially disturbance of old Pb-based paint by power sanding (Mielke et al 2001).…”

“…Concentrations in dust collected directly from streets in the mid-1970s were as high as 52,000 ppm Pb (Harrison 1979), although roadside soil lead concentrations tend to be orders of magnitude less. Elevated lead concentrations in roadside soils vary depending on distance from the road, traffic intensity, and prevailing wind direction and have been reported in concentrations ranging from just a few ppm above background to more than 30 times background (Page and Ganje 1970; Page et al 1971; Smith 1976; Tong 1990). It has been shown that soil lead concentrations in large cities can be 10 to 100 times greater than that of smaller cities and towns due to traffic volumes (Mielke and Reagan 1998; Mielke 1999).…”
