Roads to the past: how to go and not to go backward in time in quantum theories

Abstract: In this article I shall defend, against the conventional understanding of the matter, that two coherent and tenable approaches to time reversal can be suitably introduced in standard quantum mechanics: an Borthodox^approach that demands time reversal to be represented in terms of an anti-unitary and anti-linear time-reversal operator, and a Bheterodoxâ pproach that represents time reversal in terms of a unitary, linear time-reversal operator. The rationale shall be that the orthodox approach in quantum theorie… Show more

“…And in this sense the metaphysics of time comes first: It determines not only what time reversal is but also upon what it is supposed to act. I have suggested elsewhere (Lopez 2019) that our metaphysics of time plays an active role in modelling the time-reversal operator in quantum mechanics. Here I submit that this is not exclusive of quantum mechanics but a more general facet of any conceptualization of time reversal in physics 3 .…”

“…Second, it has proved to be crucial in empirical research as well as in guiding theory construction (Sachs 1987, Kleinknecht 2003, Sozzi 2008, Caulton 2016, which highlights its explanatory value in the foundations of physics. In addition, a recent philosophical discussion focuses on the meaning of time reversal in different physical theories, on how it must be interpreted and defined in general and in particular cases (see, for instance, Savitt 1996, Albert 2000, Callender 2000, Earman 2004, Malament 2004, North 2008, Roberts 2017, Lopez 2019 among many others).…”

“…On the one hand, the overarching attitude (the orthodoxy, henceforth) points out that in order to reverse the dynamical evolution of a quantum system, an anti-unitary time-reversal operator must be given. On the other hand, some philosophers have lately argued that such orthodoxy might be challenged (Albert 2000, Callender 2000, Lopez 2019), which has paved the way for non-standard representations of time reversal in quantum mechanics (QM, henceforth), in general, in terms of a unitary implementation.…”

“…We have a relatively sharp recipe of how time reversal should be formally implemented in abstract, but when it comes to details or concrete instantiations, some problems come up even in such an abstract level. For discussion, seeSachs 1987, Albert 2000, Callender 2000, Roberts 2017, Lopez 2019).…”
