Roadmap for Lean implementation in Indian automotive component manufacturing industry: comparative study of UNIDO Model and ISM Model

Abstract: The demands for automobiles increased drastically in last two and half decades in India. Many global automobile manufacturers and Tier-1 suppliers have already set up research, development and manufacturing facilities in India. The Indian automotive component industry started implementing Lean practices to fulfill the demand of these customers. United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has taken proactive approach in association with Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACM… Show more

“…ISM uses words, digraphs, and discrete mathematics to reveal the intrinsic structure of system/complex issues/problem under consideration (Jadhav et al 2015a, b). ISM has been used by researchers for understanding direct and indirect relationships among various variables in different industries (Jadhav et al 2014b(Jadhav et al , 2015a. ISM is a tool which permits identification of structure within a system (Jadhav et al 2014a;Kumar et al 2013a, b;Raj et al 2010;Rajesh et al 2007;Solanki and Choudhary 2014).…”

“…Satapathy and Mishra (2013) designed a customer-based systematic framework for Indian electricity industry using quality function deployment (QFD) by measuring service quality using artificial neural network (ANN) and also used ISM approach for finding the interrelationships between design requirements of electricity industry. Jadhav et al (2015b) proposed a roadmap for lean implementation in Indian automotive component manufacturing industry by comparing ISM model and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)-Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) model. Bhanot et al (2017) presented a study that aims to strengthen drivers and mitigate the barriers of sustainable manufacturing using an integrated approach of decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory approach, maximum mean de-entropy algorithm, structural equation modelling and interpretive structural modelling.…”

“…The increasing demand for high quality products and highly capable business processes by large organization has left no choice on the SMEs to consider Lean Manufacturing. A road map has been developed for Lean implementation in Indian auto component industry for sustainable Lean implementation by Jadhav JR, Mantha SS and Rane SB [20].…”
