Road Surface Profile Synthesis: Assessment of Suitability for Simulation

Abstract: Vibration analysis plays an essential role to enhance the design of the vehicle, related to its comfort and safety level. It is useful to determine the relations between the road profile or its characteristics to the particular properties of vehicles and evaluate the dynamic response to the applied road profile. During the design stage, the simulation of vehicle suspension requires an input of road surface for the initial dynamic load. Therefore, an artificial road profile, created according to a specific meth… Show more

“…The reference frequency Ω 0 = 1 rad/m, the lower break frequency Ω 1 = 0.21 × 2π rad/m, and the higher break frequency Ω 2 = 1.22 × 2π rad/m produced a minimal error for the Swedish road network [63]. Additionally, a Welch-type windowing function with the value of the exponent equal to 10 was used to minimize the appearance of abrupt shifts at the connections between profile segments [64]. The profile generated in this way applied to the left side, and the profile for the right side was formed by randomly increasing or decreasing it by 20%.…”

“…There are several approaches to generate random road profiles based on the standard, which are white noise filtration, moving average of white noise, sinusoidal approximation, Gaussian white noise, hybrid approach, Laplace processes and Gaussian random field. 17 Lenkutis et al (2021) compares the white noise filtration, the sinusoidal approach and the moving average of white noise. In case of the white noise filtration, a white noise signal is transformed into a road profile through a first-order linear shape filter.…”
