Road Roughness Estimation Based on the Vehicle Frequency Response Function

Abstract: Road roughness is an important factor in road network maintenance and ride quality. This paper proposes a road-roughness estimation method using the frequency response function (FRF) of a vehicle. First, based on the motion equation of the vehicle and the time shift property of the Fourier transform, the vehicle FRF with respect to the displacements of vehicle–road contact points, which describes the relationship between the measured response and road roughness, is deduced and simplified. The key to road rough… Show more

“…Qingxia Zhang et al proposed a road roughness estimation method using the frequency response function (FRF) of a vehicle [24]. In this study, the equation for the vehicle response, road roughness, and vehicle FRF was deduced andset up in a linear equation system; hence, road roughness can be estimated using the vehicle FRF and the measured vehicle responses.…”

“…In this context, real-time damage identification can be carried out by means of eigen-perturbation techniques, which are computationally more efficient than other approaches such as Kalman filtering, which becomes resource intensive in cases of many degrees of freedom [ 10 ]. According to the literature, such techniques can be adapted to detect road surface irregularities, but power spectral density (PSD) is still adopted as a convenient way to identify road status and roughness [ 11 ]. To fill the gap in the literature findings, it is important to provide RAs with tools able to reliably screen the road pavement conditions of the entire road network while being user-friendly, high performance and low cost [ 12 ].…”
