Road grade estimation for look-ahead vehicle control using multiple measurement runs

Abstract: a b s t r a c tLook-ahead cruise controllers and other advanced driver assistance systems for heavy duty vehicles require high precision digital topographic road maps. This paper presents a road grade estimation algorithm for creation of such maps based on Kalman filter fusion of vehicle sensor data and GPS positioning information. The algorithm uses data from multiple passes over the same road to improve previously stored road grade estimates. Measurement data from three test vehicles and six experiments have… Show more

“…Numerous approaches to estimation problems of this type also exist in the literature, including work by Sahlholm et al [11] [12] [13] considering the learning of road gradient profile over multiple passes along the same route by heavy duty vehicles. Recursive Least Squares methods are common for estimation of multiple parameters, for instance, Vahidi [14] estimates road gradient and mass simultaneously.…”

“…These attributes of the look-ahead system also benefits the maintenance cost of the vehicle. Several look-ahead methods have already been proposed, see [3,4,10,11].The speed proposed by the look-ahead control system can differ from the speed which is natural for a human driver. The driver's speed selection depends on limited and inaccurate visual information about the oncoming road.…”
