RNA-seq analysis reveals the role of red light in resistance against Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 in tomato plants

Abstract: BackgroundPlants attenuate their responses to a variety of bacterial and fungal pathogens, leading to higher incidences of pathogen infection at night. However, little is known about the molecular mechanism responsible for the light-induced defence response; transcriptome data would likely facilitate the elucidation of this mechanism.ResultsIn this study, we observed diurnal changes in tomato resistance to Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 (Pto DC3000), with the greatest susceptibility before midnight. Ni… Show more

“…Based on the inspection of public transcriptomic data (Yang et al, 2015;Jupe et al, 2013), we verified that Solyc03g080190 is up-regulated by infection with P. syringae pv. tomato (DC3000) and P.…”

“…In a translational approach, de Toledo Thomazella et al (56) identified two DMR6 orthologs in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), SlDMR6-1 and SlDMR6-2, of which only SlDMR6-1 is upregulated during infection with P. syringae pv. tomato or Phytophthora capsici (Table 1) (113,240). Using the CRISPR-Cas9 system, the authors introduced small indels in exons 2 and 3, generating mutant plants with truncated versions of SlDMR6 that disrupt the active site of the enzyme.…”

“…In the morning, the solar radiation reaching leaves is richer in red light than blue light due to atmospheric blue light filtering. The stomata open to promote gas exchange, and the basal defenses heighten (5,124) to protect from invading microbes. Bacteria that exhibit strong red-light-mediated repression of motility (122) exhibit minimal invasion, thus minimizing exposure to strong basal defenses.…”
