RNA regulators of host immunity and pathogen adaptive responses in the oral cavity

Abstract: The recent explosion of RNA-seq studies has resulted in a newfound appreciation for the importance of riboregulatory RNAs in the posttranscriptional control of eukaryotic and prokaryotic genetic networks. The current review will explore the role of trans-riboregulatory RNAs in various adaptive responses of host and pathogen in the oral cavity.

“…It seems that miR-301a by inhibiting the expression of PIAS3, which is a STAT3 activity inhibitor, can activate STAT3, which resulted in the stimulation of Th17differentiation 101,102 . “…Although sRNAs are widely considered to act as key regulators in biofilm formation (Svenningsen, 2018), there has been limited investigation of the role of these molecules in the dynamic process of biofilm formation (Kreth, Liu, Chen, & Merritt, 2015), and it remains unknown whether sRNA exerts an important role during the process of biofilm formation in S. mutans.…”

Kreth et al examine riboregulatory RNAs and their significance for virulence and microbial persistence in the oral cavity [3]. Duran-Pinedo and Frias-Lopez discuss current paradigms of the functional role of the oral microbiome and its components in dysbiosis of oral microbial ecology and its consequence for oral and non-oral diseases [4].…”
