RNA Binding Protein with Multiple Splicing: A New Marker for Retinal Ganglion Cells

Abstract: The data indicate that in the retina RBPMS is selectively expressed in RGCs and therefore could serve as a marker for RGC quantification in normal retinas and for estimation of RGC loss in ocular neuropathies.

“…5A, Right). Colocalization experiments comparing X-Gal labeling and immunohistochemistry with a ganglion-cell marker, retinal binding protein with multiple splicing (RBPMS) (31,32) (Fig. 5B), suggested that the X-Galpositive neurons constitute a small subset of ganglion cells rather than displaced amacrine cells.…”

“…The most recently characterized RGC specific marker is RBPMS, an RNA binding protein, which is a regulator of translation and post-translational modifications of proteins (Kwong et al, 2010). RBPMS is highly expressed in the retina and specific to RGCs in several mammalian species (Kwong et al, 2010;Rodriguez et al, 2014).…”

“…RBPMS is highly expressed in the retina and specific to RGCs in several mammalian species (Kwong et al, 2010;Rodriguez et al, 2014). While there are several commercially available antibodies targeted to different RBPMS epitopes, there has only been one published study to date which has validated two affinity purified RBPMS antibodies in retina (both target the same RBPMS epitope; source: rabbit or guinea pig; Rodriguez et al, 2014).…”

“…RBPMS expression in embryos and adult tissues has been studied by various methodologies in several vertebrate species supporting expression in heart and retinal ganglion cells (Shimamoto et al 1996;Gerber et al 2002;Su et al 2004;Wang et al 2008;Kwong et al 2010;Derrien et al 2012). A survey of a limited set of adult human tissues by poly(A) RNAseq indicated that RBPMS was the most highly expressed in the prostate, followed by colon, adipose tissue, and heart, with RBPMS being higher expressed than RBPMS2 in most tissues (Derrien et al 2012;Supplemental Fig.…”
