RKKY interaction of magnetic impurities in Dirac and Weyl semimetals

Abstract: We theoretically study the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between magnetic impurities in both Dirac and Weyl semimetals (SMs). We find that the internode process, as well as the unique three-dimensional spin-momentum locking, has significant influences on the RKKY interaction, resulting in both a Heisenberg and an Ising term, and an additional Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya term if the inversion symmetry is absent. These interactions can lead to rich spin textures and possible ferromagnetism in Dirac a… Show more

“…The Kondo problem is an important issue in condensed matter physics and has been widely studied by using various methods [15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23] . The Kondo problem as well as the RKKY interactions in systems with isotropic Dirac cones have been studied intensively since the discoveries of graphene and topological insulators [24][25][26][27] . “…This complication did not arise in Refs. 31,32. In the present paper we are going to investigate the indirect spin exchange coupling J eff (R) between two dopants residing directly above carbon atoms of intrinsic graphene.…”

“…An external magnetic field or magnetic doping can implement the breaking of the time-reversal symmetry. A few theoretical studies have predicted a Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction and a Kondo effect among the magnetic impurities in both Dirac and Weyl semimetals [34][35][36][37], although the experimental evidence remains lacking.…”
