Rivers as integration devices in cities

Abstract: Background: As dynamic systems rivers and cities have been in interaction under changing relations over time, and the morphology of many cities has risen through a long and steady struggle between the city functions and the river system flowing inside. This makes river cities an interesting case to study how the presence of geographical features interacts with spatial morphology in the formation of cities. Methods:The basis of this research is enabled by utilizing a novel model for cross-city comparison presen… Show more

“…Accordingly, the synergy between urban streams and rivers and urban form is complex (Penn, 2001;Solomon, 2011;Phong, 2015;Mosler, 2021) whereby each influences the other and both are influenced by the settlement's social, economic, and cultural conditions (Silva et al, 2006;Abshirini and Koch, 2016;Mosler, 2021). There are nevertheless clear longitudinal, lateral, and vertical socio-spatial connections between streams and the town plan (Kondolf and Pinto, 2017).…”

“…Furthermore, urban integration has resulted in the continued compression and fragmentation of ecological space (Abshirini and Koch, 2016;Hesse and Siedentop, 2018). Changes in spatial use due to an increase in population causes spatial integration and urban agglomeration, resulting in spatial interactions and patterns of distribution of goods and services.…”

“…Waterways are not only important for urban geographical environments but because they influence and confine their surrounding urban morphology they also perform a vital role in the shaping of societies and their economic growth (Abshirini & Koch, 2016;; Xie & Gu, 2015). Urban morphology can be considered an important approach to urban design and studies in the creation of urban form.…”
