Land use is one major factor that affects river water quality which is related to anthropogenic activities. Studies have shown that abandoned boats on watershed, petroleum and untreated wastewater from abattoirs can lead to anthropogenic pollution in surface waters. This study, therefore, was designed to assess spatial and temporal variation of selected heavy metals and level of pollution in Woji Creek. The study was carried out in the months of August, September and October 2018. Water samples were collected from five stations along the creek over a 3.2 km stretch. Water was collected to be analysed for heavy metals (Nickel, Cadmium, Copper, Lead and Iron). Results were subjected to ANOVA and heavy metal pollution index (HPI) was calculated using aquatic toxicity reference values (TRV) as threshold values. Heavy metal dominance in Woji was in the order of Pb>Ni>Fe>Cd>Cu. In the river, Ni had mean values ranging from 0.379±0.259 mg l −1 in August to 0.545±0.369 in October, while Pb with the highest concentration had mean values ranging from 0.229±0.333 mg l −1 in October to 1.534±0.103 mg l −1 in September. Concentrations of metals analysed were high than the TRV. Temporal analysis of HPI calculated for the study was above the critical heavy metal pollution index (100) (August=329.358, September=361.796, October=112.715). A correlation was observed between heavy metals analysed during the study. Spatial analysis of HPI showed higher pollution level at Station 3 with the highest anthropogenic activity along the creek. Cu showed a negative correlation to other metals analysed. Sources of pollution on this creek was identified to be both natural and majorly anthropogenic sources. This study, therefore, points out the need for proper environmental management as regards commercial activities around the waterways.

Digitalization is widely recognized as a transformative power for sustainable development. Careful alignment of progress made by digitalization with the globally acknowledged Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is crucial for inclusive and holistic sustainable development in the digital era. However, limited reference has been made in SDGs about harnessing the opportunities offered by digitalization capabilities. Moreover, research on inhibiting or enabling effects of digitalization considering its multi-faceted interlinkages with the SDGs and their targets is fragmented. There are only limited instances in the literature examining and categorizing the impact of digitalization on sustainable development. To overcome this gap, this paper introduces a new Digitainability Assessment Framework (DAF) for context-aware practical assessment of the impact of the digitalization intervention on the SDGs. The DAF facilitates in-depth assessment of the many diverse technical, social, ethical, and environmental aspects of a digital intervention by systematically examining its impact on the SDG indicators. Our approach draws on and adapts concepts of the Theory of Change (ToC). The DAF should support developers, users as well policymakers by providing a 360-degree perspective on the impact of digital services or products, as well as providing hints for its possible improvement. We demonstrate the application of the DAF with the three test case studies illustrating how it supports in providing a holistic view of the relation between digitalization and SDGs.

The correlation between stressors and bioindicators can provide evidence of environmental status both as an indication and monitoring tool, and in the identification of the pollutant source. cyanobacteria possess several hallmark traits of good bioindicators: physiological tolerances or ecological ranges of specific cyanobacterial species can differ depending on taxon-specific cellular requirements. In certain conditions cyanobacteria can form extensive blooms; this phenomenon arising from excessive nutrient input is usually of anthropogenic origin, resulting from a myriad of sources including point sources from municipal and industrial discharges, and non-point sources from agricultural runoff. This work is integrated with the activities carried out within a wider research project aimed at (a) characterizing the role of cyanobacteria as a good bioindicator of coastal water quality, (b) advancing a hierarchical monitoring approach using space-borne remote sensing to in-situ sampling and laboratory microscope analysis of cyanobacteria, (c) reporting on the taxonomic analysis of the cyanobacterial community in the coastal waters of campania region in southern Italy, and (d) exploring the relationship of cyanobacteria with the terrestrial river basins draining to the coast. In this study, the occurrence of specific cyanobacteria species in extremely polluted environment has been investigated. Specifically, the target point has been selected based on the discharge from the wastewater treatment plant in cuma, campania region (Italy). These analyses can support environmental impact studies by governmental officials regarding aquatic pollution problems e.g. determining the effectiveness of wastewater plants in preventing eutrophication impacts within specific coastal areas.
