Abstract

The article discusses the transition from Catholic to Lutheran funeral liturgies and burial customs in Norway. The emphasis is on the transition phase, but lines are drawn both backwards and to practices in the early modern period. Liturgical and canonical sources constitute the main analyzed material, complemented by diplomas and a distinctive source type, the so-called church findings: discoveries of coins under the floor of churches from the time before and after the Reformation. The author points out that the sources indicate that the Reformation entailed a significant alteration within this area. At some points, tendencies towards a certain continuity can be observed -this concerns not least popular piety performances. Vekten legges på transisjonsfasen, men det trekkes noen linjer både bakover og til praksis i tidlig moderne tid. Utgangspunktet tas i liturgiske og kirkerettslige kilder, som suppleres av diplomatarisk materiale og av en saeregen kildetype, de såkalte kirkefunnene. Dette dreier seg om myntfunn under kirkegolv fra tiden før og etter reformasjonen. Forfatteren peker på at det samlede kildetilfanget understreker at konfesjonsskiftet innebar et uttalt brudd når det gjaldt begravelsesriter. På noen områder ses tendenser til en viss kontinuitet -det gjelder primaert folkelige forestillinger og skikker.
