Ritual Patterns in the Deposits of Fauna Associated with Iberian Burials: The Necropolis of El Poblado During the Fourth to Second Centuries bc (Archaeological Complex of Coimbra del Barranco Ancho, Murcia)

Abstract: The study of grave goods, including animal deposits, offers a deeper understanding of social issues. This paper presents the results of the analysis of human and animal bone samples from the Iberian necropolis of El Poblado, Murcia. The examination focusses on 18 deposits of ovicaprids radii and ulnae, mostly of the left side, that were derived from 14 cremation tombs of the 74 studied. By considering the human and animal remains together, it is possible to highlight differences in the rituals of certain grave… Show more

“…The most methodologically rigorous contextual importance for the interpretation of ritual is the comparison of the specific context of the assemblage under study with multiple comparatives from demonstrably non-ritual contexts closely related in time and spaceits wider context (e.g. Albizuri et al, 2015;Colominas et al, 2013;Gál & Kunst, 2014;Kansa & Campbell, 2004;Lentacker et al, 2004;Mylona, 2013). For Spila Nakovana, it was this comparison with other Later Iron Age (and Late Bronze Age) settlements as well as comparison with the earlier occupations of the cave itself that provided the necessary evidence to determine the quotidian composition of the sanctuary faunal assemblage.…”

“…Belarte & Valenzuela-Lamas, 2013). Comparisons of such structured deposits (such as those in funerary contexts) with one another can be used to identify patterns in their deposition (Stanc & Bejenaru, 2004) but must be compared directly with local domestic faunal assemblages before the importance of such depositional patterns can be determined (Albizuri et al, 2015;Olson, 2000). Depositional biases towards a given taxon or age group are useful for studies of funerary offerings and cosmology, but must be compared with more mundane consumption and herd management choices in order to determine the social and/or cosmological significance in the selection of animal offerings.…”
