In view of the energy crisis all over the world, in all types of energy such as the gas and electricity crisis, the call for the use of renewable energy appeared on the basis that it was the best solution to this crisis. However, the energy was stored in containers according to the nature of the stored energy, such as batteries for electricity, which exposes part of it to loss in the process of charging and discharging it.However, the tendency to store this energy within the material itself began to emerge and apply, instead of storing energy in containers and then retrieval. The research tends to use the energy stored in the material as a solution to prevent wasting part of the energy in charging and discharging it, such as heat loss in charging and discharging electricity.So the aim of the research is using 4D printing to store and discharge energy to directly interact with the architectural problem through environmental stimuli, using heat and light stimulus to reach the desired formation or movement to solve a problem in the building

Innovation has always been the driving force behind social progress. Enterprises will adopt different types of technological innovations according to their goals, resources, and market strategies. The industry generally pays attention to the development and application of electric vehicle technology innovation, but a single method may not be able to fully explain the innovation of electric vehicle technology. Furthermore, the results of technological innovation must be presented in terms of market benefits. Otherwise, insufficient cash flow will lead to innovation interruption. Therefore, this study uses the innovation matrix proposed by Rothaermel to classify the matrix formed by the market and technology. This study collects 43 periodicals and special publications published in 2010–2022 and 40 related electric vehicle literature that can be downloaded, summarizes the literature content according to the innovation matrix using literature bibliometric perspective and analysis, and obtains (1) most of the innovative technologies of electric vehicles originated from the extension of previous technologies and (2) batteries and power supplements that are the key items of electric vehicles. The proportion of radical technological innovation is relatively high, and they are also the main factors of market sales. Theoretically, this study can provide a basis for studying the combination of Rothaermel’s “innovation matrix” and Ansoff’s “expansion matrix”. In practice, this is the first time the electric vehicle industry is taken as an example, combining the two models, aiming at technology/production/market/performance for electric vehicle industry managers, the technological innovation direction, and the formulation of market strategy operations and advanced deployment.

Purpose This paper aims to develop an innovation management framework for achieving sustainability by managing risks associated with innovative solutions during the design process. Design/methodology/approach To achieve the abovementioned aim, a research methodology was designed to achieve four objectives. Firstly, a literature review was conducted to investigate the concepts of sustainability, innovation, innovation management and innovation and the design process. Secondly, three case studies were selected and analysed to validate the identified risks of innovation and to investigate the role of innovation management towards managing risks of innovation during the design process. Thirdly, a survey questionnaire was carried out with a representative sample of architectural design firms (ADFs) in Egypt to examine their perception and application of innovation management as an approach to managing risks of innovative solutions during the design process. Finally, developing an innovation management framework to achieve sustainability through managing risks associated with innovative solutions during the design process. Findings The literature review revealed that innovation plays a significant role towards achieving sustainability objectives, but integrating innovative solutions during the design process is frequently associated with risks. During the course of this research, 30 risks of innovation were identified and classified into four categories of product, process, person and press. Case studies showed that ADFs that applied innovation management approaches were successful in managing the risks associated with innovative solutions, whereas others that failed to use such approaches failed to meet sustainability objectives. Results of the survey questionnaire revealed that ADFs not only recognised the importance of innovative solutions in developing sustainable projects but also showed a gap between theory and practice. “Project delivery” is the most important type of innovation for ADFs in Egypt, followed by “building technologies” and “organisational culture”. Moreover, there is a misalignment between ADFs’ perceptions and the strategies used to deliver successful innovations. The highest risks of innovation are “unanticipated cost of innovation”, “manufacturing technologies and development issues” and “failing to meet technical criteria”. Research limitations/implications Because of the conceptual nature of the developed framework, it has to be tested and validated to ensure its capability to achieve sustainability through managing the risks of innovative solutions during the design process which, in this research, adopted the Royal Institute of British Architects plan of work stages. Moreover, the lack of data availability directed this study to present and analyse only three case studies. Practical implications This research presents a practical solution to achieve sustainability through managing risks of innovation during the design process. It is a structured tool that can be used by ADFs in Egypt towards facilitating the shift in the direction of a more economically viable, environmentally friendly and socially acceptable built environment. Originality/value Although innovative design solutions are needed in developing sustainable buildings, a practical and systematic framework to manage associated risks during the design process is still lacking. In addition, current studies are business-oriented and need to be reinterpreted to fit with the architectural, engineering and construction disciplines. Thus, this research developed an innovation management framework to achieve sustainability through managing the risks associated with innovative solutions during the design process, which represents a synthesis that is novel and creative in thought and adds value to the knowledge in a manner that has not been previously explored.
