Risks and benefits of dermatological machine learning health care applications—an overview and ethical analysis

Abstract: Background Visual data are particularly amenable for machine learning techniques. With clinical photography established for skin surveillance and documentation purposes as well as progress checks, dermatology is an ideal field for the development and application of emerging machine learning health care applications (ML-HCAs). To date, several ML-HCAs have detected malignant skin lesions on par with experts or found overlooked visual patterns that correlate with certain dermatological diseases. However, it is w… Show more

“…The relationship between transportation and health is closely related in various publications, such as research on the role of transportation on health [3], transportation on quality of life in urban areas [7], transportation challenges to reach health facilities during the pandemic [8], and more research related to these two fields. A similar relationship also applies between machine learning and health, such as machine learning for dermatology [9], the intersection of machine learning with epidemiology [10], and so on. Although not as much as transportation and machine learning, relationships between zakat and health have also been found, such as pandemic mitigation with zakat [11], economic recovery after a pandemic with zakat [12].…”

“…Dermatology is the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the skin, hair, or nails. The authors of this research [71] want to provide a summary of the ethical considerations that are currently being debated concerning dermatological machine learning healthcare applications (ML-HCAs). They discovered that ML-HCAs provide stakeholder-specific risks that must be taken into account individually for patients, medical professionals, and society.…”

“…The authors identify potential benefits and risks associated with the development of dermatological ML-HCAs, such as better patient outcomes and decreased healthcare disparities, as well as confidentiality issues and exacerbation of healthcare disparities. They suggest that ethicists should be involved in the development process of ML-HCAs to ensure ethically and socially responsible development and clinical translation [24]. When using information technology to identify skin diseases, ethical issues must be taken into account.…”
