“…2 Resilience was a core trait of participants in the study by Mohatt, Rasmus, Thomas, Allen, Hazel, & Marlat. 7 Their study 7 highlights that change is unique to each person and often occurs after reflecting on consequences and the level of satisfaction with their lives, making intentional experiments with sobriety and learning from each relapse, and finally learning to rebuild a life outside of substance use, a theme common in PP. Seligman 9 demonstrated the importance of optimism in the treatment of depression and Herrenkohl found that resilient children were marked by "positive self-esteem, ego-resilience, personal agency, low reactivity, high sociability, maintaining supportive relationships and gaining access to prosocial mentors; both individual characteristics and environmental influences".…”

“…Mainstream models of recovery have been criticized for not addressing cultural diversity, in particular, with and among Aboriginal peoples (Blue & Darou, 2005;McCabe, 2007;Mohatt et al, 2008;Spicer, 2001). This is true in Canada, where the development of the National Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program treatment system was developed in the 1970s.…”

“…Spontaneous recovery (SR) is generally understood as the ability to overcome problematic substance use through the experience of a major life event and in absence of formal treatment (Barker & Hunt, 2007;Mohatt et al, 2008). Although many people recover from problematic substance use on their own, there is limited research on non-intervention models of recovery.…”

“…Qualitative research methods were chosen for this particular study to capture participants' unique points of view and experiences in their own words (Patton, 2002). The use of qualitative methodology is especially important when working with AI participants, as cultural context is most easily revealed and understood through open-ended, qualitative research methodologies (Denzin & Lincoln, 2000;Israel et al, 2005;Mohatt et al, 2008). In addition, quantitative methods were used to augment the qualitative findings to provide an understanding of the significant variations in program recommendations between participants based on their residence in an urban versus reservation setting and self-identified gender (Greene, 2007).…”
