Risk propagation and resilience in the agribusiness supply chain: a systematic literature review

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate risk propagation and resilience in the agribusiness supply chain (ASC).Design/methodology/approachThe paper undertakes a systematic literature review (SLR). Overall, 94 articles from six databases published between 2000 and 2022 underwent descriptive and thematic analysis.FindingsThere is a lack of research on risk propagation and resilience in the ASC for more than two decades. Accordingly, this research fills the gap in the extant literature by advancing the… Show more

“…The agribusiness sector is the backbone of global commerce, a source of food supplies, and a major catalyst of socioeconomic growth (Adetoyinbo & Mithőfer, 2023). The sector comprises any agricultural-oriented entity such as agricultural producers, processors, finance and insurance, research and development, marketing, distribution, and logistics businesses (Imbiri et al, 2023). In many economies, the sector is classified into input (seed, financing, and equipment), intermediate (storage, processing, packaging, distribution, and marketing), and consumption (restaurants and groceries).…”

“…These industries run agriculture-related activities in complex relationships that mutually influence each other. In an agribusiness supply chain, actors (agro-based enterprises) and activities integrate into a network system and are connected directly or indirectly from upstream to downstream to distribute materials and information into the hands of end customers (Imbiri et al, 2023). In emerging economies, especially sub Saharan Africa (SSA), the agribusiness sector is vital for pro-poor economic growth.…”

“…However, [23] grouped agriculture supply network risks into seven main categories: (1) weather; (2) biological and environmental factors (e.g., pests, diseases, and excessive rainfall); (3) logistical and infrastructure challenges; (4) market dynamics, including labor shortages and unpredictable customer demand; (5) policy and regulatory concerns, (6) economic considerations; and (7) operational and management aspects. Imbiri et al [65] classified the risks in agribusiness supply chains into three distinct categories, i.e., (1) risks linked to organizations, (2) risks related to the environment, and (3) risks related to networks. The logistical/infrastructural, financial, process, control, supply, and demand variables are examples of organizational risk factors.…”

“…2.1 Food supply chain resilience Food has some specific characteristics that make risk management for food supply chains more complicated (Behzadi et al, 2018) such as seasonality and perishability. However, within this field, food supply chain resilience has received relatively little attention for more than 2 decades (Imbiri et al, 2023). Some studies have defined the food supply chain resilience and consider that is a complex concept and has multiple dimensions (Zurek et al, 2022).…”
